“The Iranian people will enjoy a better future when their government begins to respect basic human rights, abandons its revolutionary posture and destabilizes foreign policy, and behaves simply like a normal nation.”
—Michael Pompeo, former U.S. Secretary of State
The Islamic Republic of Iran is a theocracy with a Supreme Leader appointed for life. The government values uniformity rather than diversity and prescribes a single religion-based set of rules to govern society.
“Morality police” abduct and arrest citizens who violate these rules, such as women leaving their homes without a male escort, driving a car, or not wearing a hijab. Iran only recently raised the marriage age for girls from 9 to 13.
Those who challenge the governing rules are killed, tortured, raped, imprisoned, and more. Human rights are not protected in the IRI.
