The Gaza humanitarian crisis has been given unprecedented attention. There are many other humanitarian crises that need the same level of global attention and activism:
Syria: More than 300,000 civilians have been killed by the Syrian regime since the Syrian civil war broke out. 12 million Syrians are currently displaced, 5 million of whom have fled to neighboring countries. In 2023, major earthquakes further plunged the suffering region further into crisis.
Sudan: As Sudan enters its second year of civil war, it skyrockets to the top of humanitarian crises. 12 million people are displaced, most healthcare facilities have been destroyed, and 19 million kids go without school. Gender-based violence has become a defining feature of the war.
Yemen: Almost 400,000 Yemenis are believed to have died as a direct or indirect result of the 8-year war between the Yemen government and the Houthis. 21 million people are in dire need of humanitarian assistance, and 4.5 million are displaced.
Congo: Since 1996, the ongoing political conflict has resulted in over 6 million deaths. 7 million people are internally displaced, and over 1 million have fled to neighboring countries. Over 23 million suffer acute food insecurity.
Ukraine: The 10-year conflict with Russia escalated into a war in 2022. Since then, over 3.7 million Ukrainians have been internally displaced, and over 6 million have fled. Russia has violated humanitarian law with over 1,000 attacks on medical facilities and 2,500 attacks on schools.
Gaza: In the Israel-Hamas war, over 34,000 Gazans have been killed - half are civilians, and over half of those are women and children. Hamas conducts war in populated areas, including medical facilities, mosques, and schools. Israeli attacks on those facilities have left Gaza with a severely crippled hospital system and no functioning schools. 2 million Gazans are in dire need of humanitarian assistance.
